The Fat Woman on the Sopranos

The Fat Woman on the Sopranos

Ginny Sack, Johnny Sack’s wife, a very supersized woman with very big hair was a welcome addition to the cast of the Soprano’s last season(which was two years ago in real life). She was picked after an open casting call(amusingly called a cattle call), and had a very small role. Except, everyone seemed to really enjoy her acting and the interplay between the very fat woman and the fastidiously skinny Johnny Sack, and so they added additional scenes for her, including one in which her “dieting” which was very unsuccessful was found out by her husband. Rather than just screaming at her about why she was so fat, his response was along the lines that he loved her, and she didn’t have to lose weight for him. The first real SSBBW FA on mainstream, if cable, television?

Tonight, the first episode of the next season, Ginny Sack is back, though it was a bit tough on the first watching to see if she’s gained weight, stayed the same or lost weight, though it's clear that she’s still a SSBBW. She had two scenes and it looks like she will be involved in a number of the story lines with several of the characters, including her husband who’s in jail and Carmela Soprano(Tony’s wife).

Curious if any of you BBW’s, SSBBWs or FA’s have any thoughts on Ginny Sack.

Hi Huge,

I love Ginny Sack! :-) (I also have a crush on her husband Johnny.) The episode last season, or was it a couple of seasons ago, about her dieting was one of my absolute favourites. The scene where Johnny catches her in the basement sneaking junk food was one of the most poignant things I have ever seen ... and the fact that Johnny got so furiously mad when he found out people were making fun of her and vowed to defend her honour and all that ... oh my God what a man. :-) So what if he's a cold-blooded killer. At least he sticks up for his wife.

Ginny looked very pale and washed out last night sans makeup, I guess Johnny being in jail has depressed her. It'll be interesting to see what happens with her.

Could you believe what Junior did? Holy f*#k! Leave it to the Sopranos to make up for lost time with a big bang :-) in more ways than one of course. That scene with the guy hanging himself was really grotesque too. They spare us nothing. Bu then again, that's why we love it, right?

I don't have cable so I can't watch the show. It is nice to see fat women in good strong normal roles finally. As much as I love Mo'Nique, she's a bit much at times, and it pains me to see fat women being lampooned the way she does. I think it takes an extremely strong sense of self to do that though.

That aside, I love Mo'Nique's F.A.T. beauty pageant on O. Again I didn't get to see it, but I love the idea of women celebrating their beauty as fat women. (I know, I know, they weren't REALLY fat... LOL i.e. SSBBW or BBW)

Ah, dear Jabberwocky, your comment was touching and amusing, both for your sincere views and the fact that you were positive about both the Ginny Sack character and the Monique show without having seen either.

I've only seen Monique(with or without the apostrophe) on Showtime at the Apollo following SNL and favored her when she was bigger than she is now and had a special call out to the fat girls in the front who were her people. Not sure if she's been coopted as the token fat girl in the media as she's herself shrunken a bit in size, but she certainly proclaims that she's a big girl and that's more than alright, which is a good thing.
